Episode 13: The Five Stages Every Change Goes Through
Change is hard, and if you're waiting to wake up one day feeling completely certain and ready, you're going to be waiting forever. I'm recording this from my mastery seminar because this topic comes up with every group I teach - people struggling with change and feeling stuck in fear.
Here's what I wish someone had told me: change has 5 predictable stages, and feeling lost or broken during the process is completely normal.
Stage 1: Resistance - You know something needs to change but you're avoiding it, staying busy, over-analyzing. Just acknowledge you're in resistance and breathe through it.
Stage 2: Confusion - Overwhelming feelings of being lost, questioning everything. You stop following old conditioning and it feels uncomfortable. Don't push for clarity - sit with the questions and trust answers will come.
Stage 3: Breakdown - This is where most people give up. You feel emotionally broken, experience ego death. But here's the truth: before rebirth, there needs to be death. If the old doesn't go, the new can't come. This phase is essential, not something to avoid.
Stage 4: Insight - First glimpses of the new you. You start feeling what the change could be like in small moments. Take small steps and celebrate them, even when you slip back.
Stage 5: Rebirth - You embody the change as your new normal. New habits and deeper confidence become who you are.
Fear isn't your enemy - it's showing you exactly where your expansion lies. When you see fear as a friend pointing toward your growth edges, everything shifts.
Most people avoid change by seeking external permission, skipping the breakdown phase, or not celebrating small wins. Remember: even when change looks easy for others, everyone goes through these same stages. I've spent plenty of nights crying on the floor during my own transformations.
Change is cyclical, just like nature. After every winter comes spring. Trust the process and be patient with yourself.
The Bottom Line
- Change follows 5 predictable stages: resistance, confusion, breakdown, insight, and rebirth
- The breakdown phase is essential - you can't skip it and still have lasting transformation
- Fear points toward your growth edges and shows you where you're still conditioned
- Everyone struggles with change, even when it looks easy from the outside
- Celebrate small wins and be patient with yourself through the process
